A Peer Review model for Group-based Student Assessment
Managing the fair and equitable contribution of all students during group-based assessments is a long-standing and difficult issue within Teaching & Learning.
Managing the fair and equitable contribution of all students during group-based assessments is a long-standing and difficult issue within Teaching & Learning. Peer Review, which is distinct from Peer Evaluation that seeks to have students directly grade one another's work, instead focuses on a structured reflective process for students within group assessments. This workshop will present an effective Peer Review system deployed in Google Forms (though easily adaptable to other platforms) that was initially designed by Dr Dónal Mulligan for the BSc in Multimedia programme at DCU School of Communications, and has been continuously developed over a period of several years. Dr Mulligan's work on this and other contributions to educational practice has been the subject of multiple Teaching & Learning awards. This Peer Review method has been deployed in a number of Irish universities and academic disciplines and has provided a robust and scalable approach to managing a difficult issue in assessment.
The workshop will detail the rationale and operation of the Peer Review as well as proving an opportunity for discussion of implementing novel approaches to assessment.
